  • Hello from Michigan!

Hi Everyone, I am just now seeing this MIM even though I have been a member of ASPHP for well over a year now. I am a nurse by background but my role is SmartMOVES safe patient handling and mobilization program lead, yes! a mouthful! I oversee our formal safe patient handling program across our 6 acute care hospital sites. We have come a long way in our program but there is still work to be done to ensure patient and associate safety when it comes to patient handling and mobility.

Having been in this role for 3 years; living and breathing all that is safe patient handling and mobilization I have a poem I wrote about the work we do

    The Tugboat

As I gaze upon the sunset in the open sea

I found myself tracking quite a site to see

A tugboat undersized attempting to free

A ship of size to steer into the breeze

It pushes, it pulls this workhorse of the sea

Only to remind of a similar career to me

An industry close to my heart where we

Heal and comfort those in need

We push, we pull despite the size indeed

We are a workhorse not to the sea

    But to healthcare, healthcare indeed

Tugboats are equipped to manage such weight

But for us it is best to wait

Wait for the help, wait for the means

To safely push, pull, and move those most in need

I look forward to participating in this forum!

    Brook,

Like your poem and enthusiasm. Keep up your good work. Will you be attending the conference in Orlando next month?
